* * * * * Researchers attached synchronous motion, digitally recording tags (DTAG) to humpback whales in the sanctuary. DTAGs are small, non-invasive, suction-cup attached tags that use a pressure sensor and 3-axis magnetometer and accelerometers to archive depth, heading, pitch, and roll at a rate of 50 Hz TrackPlot software uses a ribbon to represent the 3D swim path (track) of the whale, with the ribbon’s center being the center of the whale’s swim path Loops, turns and twists in the ribbon correspond to the same orientations in the DTAG and therefore the whale. When combined with bathymetric data, TrackPlot can show where in the water column particular whale behaviors occur and whether or not animals would be vulnerable to entanglement.
