RALC/AIP/shadler 11/08 AGING-IN-PLACE “If you associate enough with older people who enjoy their lives who are not stored away in any golden ghetto, you will gain a sense of continuity and of the possibility for a full life.” Margaret Mead What is it? Aging-in-Place (AIP) is the ability to live in ones own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible. It means not having to move from ones present residence to secure necessary support services in response to changing needs. Today, ‘Livability’ can be extended through the incorporation of recently developed universal design principles, telecare and other assistive technologies. Why? Its where you want to be. A recent AARP survey showed that 90% of elders wish to remain in their own home. In the United States, the US Census forecasts a spike in the age 60+ population from approximately 44 million people in 2005 to 74 million in 2020 - an absolute increase of 68 percent – not surprisingly, Aging-in-Place has become a growth industry. Current Trends in Aging in Place The popularity of Aging in Place has been spurred in part by the successful establishment of the Beacon Hill Village (BHV) in the wealthy Beacon Hill community of Boston in 2001 (). In 2007, a national conference on Aging in Place was held in Boston. The conference drew heavily from the Beacon Hill Village model and was attended by government agencies and interested parties from North America, Europe and Australia. In large part because of the success of the Beacon Hill Village (BHV), communities across America are now fully engaged in and committed to finding ways to better serve seniors by developing action plans that address future needs and ensure that necessary services are in place for seniors.
