It dates back to the 2001-2003 timeframe, and has been updated numerous times as Microsoft Office has changed. In this document, we focus on the Excel spreadsheet support in POI, as it has been most commonly used. The current stable version is 3.7, released October 29, 2010. The 3.6 version was released in 14 December 2009. The 3.5 version was released in September 2009. The 3.2 version was released in October 2008. The 3.1 version was released in June 2008. All of our development during 2008-2009 has been with the 3.2 version. We updated to this at Incra in December 2008. We updated to 3.7 in November 2011. The major new features in versions 3.7, 3.6, and 3.5 include better support of the Office 2007 formats (such as the .xlsx file format). As an alternative, please also check jExcelApi at /. This library doesn’t handle all of the Office formats (focuses just on Excel), but has a smaller library size.
