Simple Sentences have one main clause of meaning that makes sense on its own. E.g. The television was broken. Compound Sentences They are made up of 2 simple sentences, joined by ‘and’ or ‘but’. E.g. The television was broken and smoke came out of the back. Complex Sentences They are made up of 2 or more clauses. One = the MAIN CLAUSE (makes sense on its own) Two = the SUBORDINATE CLAUSE (Does not make sense without the main clause) E.g. The television, which was broken, was thrown out.
