abstract
A handheld, high-resolution small ?eld of view (SFOV) pinhole gamma camera has been characterised using a new set of protocols adapted from standards previously developed for large ?eld of view (LFOV) systems. Parameters investigated include intrinsic and extrinsic spatial resolution, spatial linearity, uniformity, sensitivity, count rate capability and energy resolution. Camera characteristics are compared to some clinical LFOV gamma cameras and also to other SFOV cameras in development.

Introduction
Nuclear medical images are typically acquired using large ?eld of view (LFOV) gamma cameras designed for whole body scanning and SPECT imaging. A new generation of small ?eld of view (SFOV) gamma cameras, now in development, has been designed to provide higher resolution capabilities for speci?c procedures, such as sentinel node localisation [1].
Standardised procedures for assessing the performance characteristics of medical gamma cameras have generally been based on the original standards published by the US National Electrical Manufacturing Association (NEMA) [2
