abstract
Contact electri?cation and electrostatic interactions often occur in the ?uidization process, which can signi?cantly in?uence the dynamic behaviour of particles and the ?uidization performance. In this study, a discrete element method coupled with computational ?uid dynamics (DEM-CFD) is developed by implementing contact electri?cation and electrostatic interaction models and the combined effects of contact electri?cation and electrostatic interaction on ?uidization are analysed. It is found that the charge of the particle system increases with the super?cial gas velocity. Particles of different material properties (especially work function) can be bi-charged and form agglomerates. At low super?cial gas velocities, the particle bed cannot be fully ?uidized and the pressure drop tends to be stable rather than ?uctuating as the gas ?ows through the micro-channels of the formed agglomerates. However, at high super?cial gas velocities, the agglomerates can break, inducing strong ?uctuation of the pressure drop. This implies that the electrostatic phenomena and ?uidization behaviour can mutually in?uence each other during the process.
