METHODS：U type suture was done through the aorta out- er member using 9. 0 proline and the aorta was temporarily clamped proximal to the renal arteries. The site of aorta with U type suture was then punctured with a needle（outer diameter 0. 9 mm）and the needle was further advanced in- to the adjacent vena cava. Then the needle was moved back to the aorta，the needle was again advanced into the adjacent vena cava and two aortocaval fistulas were made. After withdrawal of the needle，U type suture was immedi- ately tied. The clamp was removed，and the patency of the shunt was visually verified as swelling and mixing of venous and arterial blood in the vena cava. Sham-operated rats served as controls. RESULTS：perioperative mortality of rats with aortocaval shunt was 10%. Five months after shunt induction，rats showed a significant cardiac hypertro- phy with a relative heart mass of（3287. 3 1 126. 6）mg· kg 1 body mass（ ! 2265. 8 1 118. 8 mg·kg 1 in control rats，# 0. 01）. Blood pressure，heart rate，left ventricular end-systolic pressure were significantly reduced，but left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and morphometry of ven- tricular myocytes significantly increased in rats with shunt.
