Abstract FollowingtheapproachofGurtinandPodio-Guidugli(1998), theproblemofcrackpropagationbasedonthenotionofcon?gu- rationalforcesandcouplesinmicropolarcontinuaisconsidered. 1 Introduction Very recently Gurtin and Podio-Guidugli (1998), developed a frame- work for dynamical fracture, concerning on the derivation of balance equations and constitutive equations that describe the motion of the crack tip in two-space dimensions. They worked within the nonlin- ear theory because the basic ideas are most easily explained within a frameworkthatdistinguishesbetweenreferenceanddeformedcon?gu- rations;moreover,insteadoflayingdownspeci?cassumptionsregard- ingthestrengthofthecrack-tipsingularities,theyconsiderhypotheses motivatedbytherequirementthattheunderlyingphysicallawsmake sense. But, as they stated, con?gurationalforcesarelessintuitive: theyarerelatedtotheintrinsic coherencyofabody’smaterialstructureandperformworkintheaddi- tionandremovalofmaterialandintheevolutionofstructuraldefects. FollowingGurtinandStruthers(1990)andGurtin(1995),theyviewed con?gurational forces as basic primitive objects consistent with their own force balance. Con?gurational forces de?ned via the calculus of variationsasderivativesofanenergyhavebeenintroducedearlier,e.g. intheclassicworks
