DOI:10.2298/AVB0703191R UDK619:612.12 CONCENTRATIONOFCORTISOL,INSULIN,GLUCOSEANDLIPIDSINTHEBLOODOF CALVESATVARIOUSAGES RADOJI^I]BILJANA,[AMANCHandPEJINIVANA Facultyofveterinarymedicine,Beograd (Received,15September,2006) Clinicallyhealthycalves(n=30)oftheHolstein-Friesian breed,at different ontogenic periods (15 days, 2 and 4 months of age), were investigatedinthiswork. Bloodsampleswereobtainedbyjugularvenepuncture,alwaysin the morning,1 hour after feeding.The concentrationof glucosewas determined in the blood. Cortisol, insulin, lipids and cholesterol concentrationsweredeterminedinthebloodsera. Afterstatisticalanalysisoftheobtainedresults,wefoundthatthe meanvaluesforserumcortisolconcentrationsincalvesat15daysand 2monthsofagewereverysimilar.At4monthsofage,cortisollevelwas slightly lower, but the difference was not statistically significant. The meanvaluesofinsulinconcentrationwashigherincalvesat2months ofagewhenforageandconcentratedfeedwereofferedbesidesmilk, butin4monthsoldcalvesthevaluesweresignificantlylower(p0.05). Themeanbloodglucoseconcentrationsweresimilarandhigher thanthephysiologicalvaluesincalvesat15daysand2monthsofage, but valuesat4monthsofageweresignificantlylower(p0.01). Rapidabsorptionofglucoseinthecalvesdigestivesystemat15 daysand2monthsofage,contributedtothehighlevelofglycaemia1 houraftermilkintake.
