Thepresentstudyexaminedtheanxiolyticandantidepressante?ectsoftheaqueousextractofAla?amulti?oraStapf (AM)stem barks(150and300mg/kg,7daysadministration)onratsandmice,usingexperimentalparadigmsofanxietyanddepression.In theopen?eld,theaqueousextractincreasedsigni?cantlythenumberofcentersquarecrossedandthetimespentatthecenter ofthe?eldaswellastherearingtime,whilethegroomingtimewasreducedsigni?cantly.Intheelevatedplusmaze,theaqueous extractincreasedthetimespentandthenumberofentriesintheopenarms.Allthesee?ectswerealsocompletelyreversedby ?umazenil,anantagonistofbenzodiazepinereceptorsandpindololaβ-adrenoceptorsblocker/5-HT1A/1Breceptorantagonist. Thetimespentinthelightcompartment,thelatencytime,andthenumberofthelight-darktransitionsincreasedsigni?cantly inthelight/darkexplorationtestafterthetreatmentwithAM.Theextractwasabletoreducesigni?cantlytheimmobilitytime andincreaseswimmingaswellasclimbingduration.Takentoget
