Pathogenicmechanismsunderlyingthedevelopmentofsystemiclupuserythematosus(SLE)areverycomplexandnotyetentirely clari?ed.However,thepivotalroleofTlymphocytesintheinductionandperpetuationofaberrantimmuneresponseiswell established.AmongTcells,IL-17producingThelper(Th17)cellsandregulatoryT(Treg)cellsrepresentanintriguingissuetobe addressedinSLEpathogenesis,sinceanimbalancebetweenthetwosubsetshasbeenobservedinthecourseofthedisease.Treg cellsappeartobeimpairedandthereforeunabletocounteractautoreactiveTlymphocytes.Conversely,Th17cellsaccumulatein targetorganscontributingtolocalIL-17productionandeventuallytissuedamage.Inthissetting,targetingTreg/Th17balancefor therapeuticpurposesmayrepresentanintriguingandusefultoolforSLEtreatmentinthenextfuture.Inthispaper,thecurrent knowledgeaboutTregandTh17cellsinterplayinSLEwillbediscussed. 1.Introduction developmentofthediseaseandthelongstandingparadigm ofThelper(Th)1/Th2cellimmuneresponsewasrecently challengedbytherecognitionofTh17cellsandregulatory T cells (Treg) [5, 6].
