Thispaperdescribesacapacitance-basedtipclearancemeasurementsystemwhichengineershaveusedinthemostdemanding turbinetestapplications.ThecapacitanceprobehassurvivedextendeduseinamajorEuropeangasturbinemanufacturer’shigh- temperaturedemonstratorunit,whereitfunctionedreliablyataturbineentrytemperatureinexcessof1800degreesKelvin.This paperexploresbladebybladetipclearancemeasurementtechniquesandexaminesprobeperformanceunderlaboratoryconditions insupportofhigh-temperatureinstallations.Thepaperoutlinesthebladebybladetipclearancemeasurementtechniqueand describestheexperimentalfacilityusedtostudytipclearancemeasurement.Thepaperalsofullydescribesthemethodusedto calibratethemeasurementsysteminordertoascertainmeasurementaccuracy.Thepaperclari?eshowthepracticalproblems wereovercomeassociatedwithmakingbladebybladetipclearancemeasurementsinbothcompressorandturbineenvironments.
