Thirteen bovineleukemiavirus- (BLV-)negativeand22 BLV-positiveHolsteincowswere immunizedwithJ5Escherichia coli bacterinatdryo?,threeweeksbeforecalving,duringthesecondweekaftercalving,andthreeweeksafterthethirdimmunization. Serumwascollectedbeforetheinitialimmunization,immediatelybeforethethirdandfourthimmunizations,and21daysafterthe fourthimmunization.Anti-J5E.coliIgM,IgG1,andIgG2titersweredeterminedbyELISA.Anti-J5E.coliIgMtitersdidnotdi?er signi?cantly(P =.98)betweengroups.Increasesinanti-J5E.coliIgG1titerswerehigherintheBLV-negativecows(P =.057). Geometricmeananti-J5E.coliIgG2titersincreasedfourfoldintheBLV-negativecows,whichwassigni?cantlyhigher(P=.007) thanthetwofoldincreaseintheBLV-positivecows.CattleinfectedwithBLVmayhaveimpairedserologicresponsesfollowing immunizationwithJ5bacterin,andresponsemaydi?eraccordingtoantibodyisotype. 1.Introduction type 1 cytokines from CD4+ T lymphocytes, including interleukin-2(IL2),IL12,andinterferongamma(IFNγ ),are reduced during BLV infections, and this altered cytokine productionwassuggestedtoberesponsible forsuppressed mitogen-induced T lymphocyte proliferation [4–6].
