Morethan350millionpeopleworldwidearepersistentlyinfectedwithhumanheptatitisBvirus(HBV)andatrisktodevelop livercirrhosisandhepatocellularcarcinomamakinglong-termtreatmentnecessary.Whileavaccineisavailableandnewantiviral drugsarebeingdeveloped,eliminationofpersistentlyinfectedcellsisstillamajorissue.Recente?ortsinadoptivecelltherapyare experimentallyexploringimmunotherapeuticeliminationofHBV-infectedcellsbymeansofabiologicalattackwithgenetically engineered“designer”Tcells. 1.PersistentHepatitisBVirusInfectionin theLiverIsatRisktoDevelopCirrhosisand HepatocellularCarcinoma beusedtoidentifyHBVinfectedindividuals(forreview,see [1,2]). While infection during the ?rst year of life results in chronic, often life-long infection in 90% of individuals, infectionduringadulthoodismostlyclearedresultinginlife- long protective immunity. Clearance is accompanied by a vigorous,polyclonalHBV-speci?cTcellresponse.Persistent liver infection may cause substantial in?ammatory liver disease associated with elevation of serum transaminases, necroin?ammation, and tissue damage, which is classi?ed aschronichepatitisB.Morethan25%ofchronichepatitis B patients develop progressiv
