In2003,therevisedAmericanCancerSocietyguidelinesrecommendedthatbreastself-examination(BSE)beoptional.Of822 womendiagnosed with breast cancer in our hospital from 1994 to 2004, sixty four (7.7%) were 40 years of ageor younger. Fortyfour(68.7%)oftheseyoungwomendiscoveredtheirbreastcancersonBSE,17(18%)bymammography,and3(4.7%) byclinicalbreastexaminationbymedicalprofessionals.Of758womenover40yearsofagediagnosedwithbreastcancer,382 (49%)discoveredtheircancerbymammography,278(39%)byBSE,and98(14%)byaclinicalbreastexamination.Lymphnode metastasesintheolderwomenwasone-halfthatintheyoungerwomen(21%versus42%),andahigherpercentageofyounger womenpresentedwithmoreadvanceddisease.Inresponsetoincreasingbreastcancerinyoungwomenunder41yearsofage, encouragementofproperbreastself-examinationiswarrantedandshouldbeadvocated. 1.Introduction largernumbers ofwomeninthedevelopedworld todelay their ?rst pregnancy until later in life.
