Obesityandrelateddisordersarethoughttohavetheirrootsinmetabolic“thriftiness”thatevolvedtocombatperiodicstarvation. Theassociationoflowbirthweightwithobesityinlaterlifecausedashiftintheconceptfromthriftygenetothriftyphenotypeor anticipatoryfetalprogramming.Theassumptionofthriftinessisimplicitinobesityresearch.Weexaminehere,withthehelpofa mathematicalmodel,theconditionsforevolutionofthriftygenesorfetalprogrammingforthriftiness.Themodelsuggeststhata thriftygenecannotexistinastablepolymorphicstateinapopulation.Theconditionsforevolutionofthriftyfetalprogramming arerestrictedifthecorrelationbetweenintrauterineandlifetimeconditionsispoor.Suchacorrelationisnotobservedinnatural coursesoffamine.Ifthereisfetalprogrammingforthriftiness,itcouldhaveevolvedinanticipationofsocialfactorsa?ecting nutritionthatcanresultinapositivecorrelation. 1.Introduction under conditions of better availability of nutrients and allowedreutilizationunderstarvation.Thethriftygenewas under positive selection pressure in ancestral life when seasonal and climatic conditions resulted into ?uctuating food availability. This concept soon became almost an axiom,althoughnosuch“thrifty”geneorsetofgeneshave beenconv
