BOUNDARYVALUESANDTHETRANSFORMATIONPROBLEM FORCONSTANTPRINCIPALSTRAINMAPPINGS JULIAN GEVIRTZ Received 17April 2002 We initiate a study of homeomorphisms f with constant principal strains (cps) between smoothly bounded planar domains D,D.An initial result shows that in orderfortheretobesuchamapping ofagivenJordandomainDontoD,acertain condition ofanisoperimetric naturemustbesatis?ed bythelatter.Thereafter, we establish the fundamental fact that principal strain lines (characteristics) ofsuch mappings necessarily have well-de?ned tangents where they meet ?D.Using this, weobtain information about the boundary values ofthe Jacobian transformation off,and?nallywedetermine theclassofallcps-homeomorphisms ofahalf-plane onto itself. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classi?cation: 35L45, 35L60, 74B99, 30C35. 1. Introduction. This paper deals with mappings with constant principal strains, thatis,mappings f ofaplanar domain D intoR2 forwhich theprin- cipal stretches of the Jacobian matrix Jf of f at z are distinct positive con- stantsm1andm2.Globalpropertiesofsuchf,tobereferredtoas(m1,m2)- mappings or less speci?cally as cps-mappings, were studied in [2, 3, 5, 6]. Homeomorphisms of this kind represent 2-dimensional deformations with constant principal strains such as those e?ected by cryptocrystalline solidi- ?cation of a planar lamina, in which context the study of global properties of cps-mappings will yield, among other things, information about the man- nerinwhichsuchdeformations canchange shapeaswellashowtheoriginal mass can be shifted around in the process. In addition, (m1,m2)-mappings constitute a tractable subclass of (m1,m2)-quasi-isometries (i.e., local home- omorphisms for which the local stretching factors are merely constrained to liebetween m1 andm2).Because theyrealizethelocallengthchangebounds extremally at all points, it is reasonable to believe that (m1,m2)-mappings manifest extremal behavior for some, at least, of the many open distortion quest
