Activation in the bulk ?uid (blood) is characterised by the Damkohler number, whichisafunctionofactivationrateandthefree-streamvelocity.Itisshownthat,asthefree-stream velocityvaries,thereexistsamaximumofactivatedplatelet?uxtothewallforparticularvaluesofthe velocity.Thesevalues,atwhichthemaximumoccur,arethemselvesfunctionsoftheplateletactivation rate.Asthefree-streamvelocityincreasestheactivationofplateletsceasesaltogetherandadhesionis reduced to a very small value strengthening the hypothesis of the correlation between atherogenesis/thrombogenesisandareasoflowshear. Vascular geometry can now be regarded as a risk factor due to the in?uence of that geometry on local haemodynamic effects. In particular, it is extremely important to gain a thorough understanding of the relationship between vascular geometry, blood ?ow and the onset of thrombus formation in both
