Obesity andhypertension, majorrisk factors forthe metabolicsyndrome, render individuals susceptible to an increased risk ofcardiovascularcomplications,suchasadversecardiacremodelingandheartfailure.Therehasbeenmuchinvestigationinto therolethatanincreaseintherenin-angiotensin-aldosteronesystem(RAAS)playsinthepathogenesisofmetabolicsyndrome andinparticular,howaldosteronemediatesleftventricularhypertrophyandincreasedcardiac?brosisviaitsinteractionwith themineralocorticoidreceptor(MR).Here,wereviewthepertinent?ndingsthatlinkobesitywithelevatedaldosteroneandthe developmentofcardiachypertrophyand?brosisassociatedwiththemetabolicsyndrome.Thesestudiesillustrateacomplexcross- talkbetweenadiposetissue,theheart,andtheadrenalcortex.Furthermore,wediscuss?ndingsfromourlaboratorythatsuggest thatcardiachypertrophyand?brosisinthemetabolicsyndromemayinvolvecross-talkbetweenaldosteroneandadipokines(such asadiponectin). 1.Introduction RAAS activity is evident in patients with congestive heart failure[17].Importantly,patientswithobesity,hypertension, or diabetes mellitus are prone to diastolic heart failure whichmaybecharacterizedbyL
