Introduction. Etiology of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is known to signi?cantly in?uence management, prognosis, and risk of recurrence. Objective. To determine if ischemic stroke subtype based on TOAST criteria in?uences mortality. Methods . We conductedanobservationalstudyofaconsecutivecohortofpatientspresentingwithAIStoasingletertiaryacademiccenter. Results.Thestudypopulationconsistedof500patientswhoresidedinthelocalcountyorthesurroundingnine-countyarea.No patientswerelosttofollowup.Twohundredandsixtyone(52.2%)weremale,andthemeanageatpresentationwas73.7years (standarddeviation,SD=14.3).Subtypeswereasfollows:largearteryatherosclerosis97(19.4%),cardioembolic144(28.8%), smallvesseldisease75(15%),othercauses19(3.8%),andunknown165(33%).Onehundredandsixtypatientsdied:69within the?rst30days,27within31–90days,29within91–365days,and35after1year.Low90-,180-,and360-daysurvival was seenincardioembolicstrokes(67.1%,65.5%,and58.2%,resp.),follow
