Videosurveillancesystem,whichcanprovidereal-timedisplayofthemonitoredsceneandvideoplayback,hasbeenemployed inmanyareasincludingcommercialsecurity,accidentinvestigation,lawenforcement,andemergencyresponse.However,audio whichcarriesimportantinformationnotavailableinvideoisusuallynottakenseriouslyandusede?ectively.Inthispaper,we develop an enhanced surveillance platform by organically integrating the low-power wireless audio sensor network (WASN) with the traditional visual surveillance network. We can obtain more comprehensive and precise monitoring without the limitationoftheline-of-sightandlightingcondition.Moreover,thisplatformisdesignedandbuiltforprovidingkeysupport tovarietiesofapplications inwireless multimedia sensornetworks. Thispaperdescribes theplatformarchitecture, including design,implementation,andperformance.Wedescribethehardwareandsoftwarecomponentsoftheaudio/videosensors.Then, wepresentthemultimediasynchronizationmechanismintheheterogeneousnetworkwhichisthefoundationofapplicationsin theproposedplatform.Besides,wedescribeasampleapplicationanddatamanagementmechanismthatwehaveimplementedto showtheusefulnessofourplatform.Ourexperimentsincludeanin-depthanalysisofthebottleneckswithintheplatformaswell
