Loss of E-cadherin expression correlates with increased expression of CD44 standard isoform.Usinganorganotypicreconstructmodel,weshowincreasedCD44expressioninareasofcellinvasionisassociated withMMP-9attheleadingedge.Moreover,ActivinAincreasescellinvasionthroughCD44upregulationafterE-cadherin loss.Takentogether,ourresultsprovidefunctionalevidenceofCD44upregulationinesophagealcancerinvasion.
