Cells have regionsofhighboundarycurvaturethatpropagatefromtheleadingedgetowardtheback,usuallyalongalternatingsides ofthecell.Curvaturewavesareeasilyseenincellsthatdonotadheretoasurface,suchascellsthatareelectrostatically repelledfromsurfacesorcellsthatextendovertheedgeofmicro-fabricatedcliffs.Withoutsurfacecontact,curvaturewaves travelfromtheleadingedgetothebackofacellat,35mm/min.Non-adherentmyosinIInullcellsdonotexhibitthese curvaturewaves.Attheleadingedgeofadherentcells,curvaturewavesareassociatedwithprotrusiveactivity.Likeregions ofhighcurvature,protrusiveactivitytravelsalongtheboundaryinawave-likemanner.Uponcontactwithasurface,the protrusionsstopmovingrelativetothesurface,andtheboundaryshapethusreflectsthehistoryofprotrusivemotion.The wave-likecharacterofprotrusionsprovidesaplausiblemechanismforthezig-zaggingofpseudopodsandfortheabilityof cellsbothtoswiminviscousfluidsandtonavigatecomplexthreedimensionaltopography.
