EvaluationofObjectiveUncertaintyintheVisualSystem SimonBarthelme′*,PascalMamassian LaboratoirePsychologiedelaPerception,CNRS,Universite′ ParisDescartes,Paris,France Abstract Theroleofsensorysystemsistoprovideanorganismwithinformationaboutitsenvironment.Becausesensoryinformation isnoisyandinsufficienttouniquelydeterminetheenvironment,naturalperceptualsystemshavetocopewithsystematic uncertainty.Theextentofthatuncertaintyisoftencrucialtotheorganism:forinstance,injudgingthepotentialthreatina stimulus.Inducinguncertaintybyusingvisualnoise,wehadhumanobserversperformataskwheretheycouldimprove theirperformancebychoosingthelessuncertainamongpairsofvisualstimuli.Resultsshowthatobservershadaccesstoa reliablemeasureofvisualuncertaintyintheirdecision-making,showingthatsubjectiveuncertaintyinthiscaseisconnected toobjectiveuncertainty.BasedonaBayesianmodelofthetask,wediscussplausiblecomputationalschemesforthatability.
