EvaluationofTuberculosisUnderreportinginGreece throughComparisonwithAnti-TuberculosisDrug Consumption TheodoreLytras1*,GeorgiaSpala2,StefanosBonovas2,TakisPanagiotopoulos1 1NationalSchoolofPublicHealth,Athens,Greece,2HellenicCentreforDiseaseControlandPrevention,Athens,Greece Abstract Surveillanceisanintegralpartoftuberculosis(TB)control.GreecehasalowTBnotificationrate,buttherearedoubtsabout underreporting.Examininganti-TBdrugconsumptionisawaytovalidatetheresultsofsurveillanceandestimateTBburden inthecountry.Weusedsurveillancedatafrom2004to2008tocalculatetheaverageprescribedtreatmentdurationwith thefirst-lineanti-TBdrugsisoniazid,rifampicin,ethambutolandpyrazinamide.Wethenobtainedthebestavailabledataon consumptionofthesedrugs,andcalculatedthenumberoftreatedcasestowhichthesequantitiescorrespond.Wethus estimatedunderreportingataround80%(77–81%),andannualTBincidenceatabout30casesper100,000population,five timesoverthenotificationrate.Underreportingwasfoundtobeconstantoverthestudyperiod,whileincidencefolloweda decreasing trend. In addition we estimated that one person receives chemoprophylaxis for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI)foreverythreeTBcases.TheseresultsindicatetheneedforacomprehensiveplantoimproveTBsurveillanceandTB contacttracinginGreece,especiallyinlightoftheeconomiccrisisaffectingthecountrysince2009.
