EvidenceforCentromereDriveintheHolocentric ChromosomesofCaenorhabditis Frantisˇek Zedek*,PetrBuresˇ DepartmentofBotanyandZoology,MasarykUniversity,Brno,CzechRepublic Abstract Inmonocentricorganismswithasymmetricmeiosis,thekinetochoreproteins,suchasCENH3andCENP-C,evolveadaptively tocounterbalancethedeleteriouseffectsofcentromeredrive,whichiscausedbytheexpansionofcentromericsatellite repeats.TheselectionregimesthatactonCENH3andCENP-Cgeneshavenotbeenanalyzedinorganismswithholocentric chromosomes,althoughholocentrismisspeculatedtohaveevolvedtosuppresscentromeredrive.WetestedbothCENH3 andCENP-CforpositiveselectioninseveralspeciesoftheholocentricgenusCaenorhabditisusingthemaximumlikelihood approachandsliding-windowanalysis.AlthoughCENP-Cdidnotshowanysignsofpositiveselection,positiveselectionhas beendetectedinthecaseofCENH3.TheseresultssupportthehypothesisthatcentromeredriveoccursinNematoda,at leastinthetelokineticmeiosisofCaenorhabditis.
