The full-length nucleotide sequence of genome Seg-3 was determinedforthirtyBTVisolatesrecoveredintheeasternMediterraneanregion,theBalkansandothergeographicareas (Spain,India,MalaysiaandAfrica).Thesedatawerecompared,basedonmolecularvariability,positive-selection-analysisand maximum-likelihood phylogenetic reconstructions (using appropriate substitution models) to 24 previously published sequences,revealingtheirevolutionaryrelationships.Theseanalysesindicatethatnegativeselectionisamajorforceinthe evolutionofBTV,restrictingnucleotidevariability,reducingtheevolutionaryrateofSeg-3andpotentiallyofotherregions oftheBTVgenome.PhylogeneticanalysisoftheBTV-4strainsisolatedoverarelativelylongtimeinterval(1979–2000),ina singlegeographicarea(Greece),showedalowlevelofnucleotidediversity,indicatingthattheviruscancirculatealm
