This data combination provides an opportunityforbiologiststostudybehaviouratapreviouslyunknownlevelofdetailandaccuracy;however,continuously recordeddataareoflittleuseunlesstheresultinglargevolumesofrawdatacanbereliablytranslatedintoactualbehaviour. WeaddressthisproblembyapplyingaSupportVectorMachineandaHidden-MarkovModelthatallowsustoclassifyan animal’sbehaviourusingasmallsetoffieldobservationstocalibratecontinuouslyrecordedactivitydata.Suchclassified data can be applied quantitatively to the behaviour of animals over extended periods and at times during which observationisdifficultorimpossible.Wedemonstratetheusefulnessofthemethodbyapplyingittodatafromsixcheetah (Acinonyxjubatus)intheOkavangoDelta,Botswana.Cumulativeactivitydatascoreswererecordedeveryfiveminutesby accelerometersembeddedinGPSradio-collarsforaroundoneyearonaverage.Directbehavioursamplingofeachofthesix cheetahwerecollectedinthefieldforcomparativelyshortperiods.Usingthisapproachweareabletoclassifyeachfive minuteactivityscoreintoasetofthreekeybehaviour(feeding,mobileandstationary),creatingacontinuousbehavioural sequencefortheentireperiod
