The objectiveistotesttheassociationofself-reportedtobaccosmokingandchewingwithfrequencyofuseoffourtypesof massmedia:newspapers,radio,television,andmovies. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Weanalyzeddatafromasex-stratifiednationally-representative cross-sectionalsurveyof 123,768womenand74,068meninIndia.Allmodelscontrolledforwealth,education,caste,occupation,urbanicity,religion, maritalstatus,andage.Infully-adjustedmodels,monthlycinemaattendanceisassociatedwithincreasedsmokingamong women(relativerisk[RR]:1?55;95%confidenceinterval[CI]:1?04–2?31)andmen(RR:1?17;95%CI:1?12–1?23)andincreased tobacco chewing among men (RR: 1?15; 95% CI: 1?11–1?20). Daily television and radio use is associated with higher likelihoodoftobaccochewingamongmenandwomen,whiledailynewspaperuseisrelatedtolowerlikelihoodoftobacco chewingamongwomen. Conclusion/Significance:InIndia,exposuretovisualmassmediamaycontributetoincreasedtobaccoconsumptioninmen andwomen,whilenewspaperusemaysuppresstheuseoftobaccochewinginwomen.Futurestudiesshouldinvestigate therolethatdifferenttypesofmediacontentandmediaplayininfluencingotherhealthbehaviors.
