Two cohorts of ranched Southern Bluefin tuna (SBT) (Thunnus maccoyii) were monitored throughoutthecommercialseason,onemaintainedinthetraditionalnearshoretunafarmingzoneandonemaintained furtheroffshore.SBTmaintainedoffshorehadreducedmortality,increasedconditionindexatweek6posttransfer,reduced bloodflukeandsealiceloads,andhaematologicalvariablessuchashaemoglobinorlysozymeequaltoorexceedingnear shoremaintainedfish.TheoffshorecohorthadnoCardicolaforsterianda5%prevalenceofCaligusspp.,comparedtoa prevalenceof85%forCardicolaforsteriand55%prevalenceforCaligusspp.nearshoreat6weeksposttransfer.Thisstudyis thefirstofitskindtoexaminetheeffectsofcommercialoffshoresitesonfarmedfishparasites,healthandperformance.
