Method:Atotalof665responseswereobtainedfrompatientswithseriousmentalillnessattendingout-patient clinicsinWesterndevelopedcountries(Germany,UKandAustralia;n=518)andPalestine(n=147).Patientswere evaluatedbyICD-10clinicaldiagnosis,anthropometricmeasurementsandcompletedaself-reportmeasureof frequenciesofconsumingdifferentfooditemsandreasonsforeating.Nutritionalhabitswerecomparedagainsta Westernnormativegroup. Results:MoreparticipantsfromPalestinewereoverweightorobese(62%)comparedtoWesterncountries(47%). IntheWesternsample,obesepatientsreportedconsumingmorelow-fatproducts(OR2.54,95%CI1.02-6.33)but alsogreatereatingduetonegativeemotions(OR1.84,95%CI1.31-2.60)thanpatientswithahealthybody-mass index.Incontrast,obesepatientsfromPalestinereportedincreasedconsumptionofunhealthysnacks(OR3.7395% CI1.16-12.00). Conclusion:Patientswithmentalillnesshavepoorernutritionalhabitsthanthegeneralpopulation,particularlyin Westernnations.Separateinterventionstoimprovenutritionalhabitsandreduceobesityarewarrantedbetween WesternnationsandPalestine.
