Abstract Background:ChildhoodobesityisapublichealthprobleminCanada.Accuratemeasurementofahealthproblem iscrucialindefiningitsburden.Theobjectiveofthisstudyistocomparetheprevalenceestimatesofoverweight andobesityinpreschoolchildrenusingthreegrowthreferences. Methods:Weightsandheightsweremeasuredon1026preschoolchildrenborninNewfoundlandandLabrador (NL),Canada,andbodymassindexcalculated.Theprevalenceofoverweightandobesitywasdeterminedand statisticalcomparisonsconductedamongthethreegrowthreferences;theCentresforDiseaseControl(CDC),the InternationalObesityTaskForce(IOTF)andtheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO). Results:CDCandIOTFproducedsimilarestimatesoftheprevalenceofoverweight,19.1%versus18.2%whilethe WHOreportedahigherprevalence26.7%(p.001).TheCDCclassifiedtwiceasmanychildrenasobesecompared totheIOTF16.6%versus8.3%(p.001)andathirdmorethantheWHO16.6%versus11.3%(p.01).Therewas variablelevelofagreementbetweenmethods. Conclusions:TheCDCreportedamuchhigherprevalenceofobesitycomparedtotheotherreferences.The prevalenceofchildhoodobesityisdependentonthegrowthreferenceused.
