ObjectSegmentationfromMotionDiscontinuitiesand TemporalOcclusions–ABiologicallyInspiredModel CorneliaBeck*,ThiloOgnibeni,HeikoNeumann InstituteforNeuralInformationProcessing,UniversityofUlm,Ulm,Germany Abstract Background:Opticflowisanimportantcueforobjectdetection.Humansareabletoperceiveobjectsinasceneusingonly kineticboundaries,andcanperformthetaskevenwhenothershapecuesarenotprovided.Thesekineticboundariesare characterizedbythepresenceofmotiondiscontinuitiesinalocalneighbourhood.Inaddition,temporalocclusionsappear alongtheboundariesastheobjectinfrontcoversthebackgroundandtheobjectsthatarespatiallybehindit. Methodology/Principal Findings: From a technical point of view, the detection of motion boundaries for segmentation basedonopticflowisadifficulttask.Thisisduetotheproblemthatflowdetectedalongsuchboundariesisgenerallynot reliable.WeproposeamodelderivedfrommechanismsfoundinvisualareasV1,MT,andMSTlofhumanandprimatecortex thatachievesrobustdetectionalongmotionboundaries.Itincludestwoseparatemechanismsforboththedetectionof motion discontinuities and of occlusion regions based on how neurons respond to spatial and temporal contrast, respectively.Themechanismsareembeddedinabiologicallyinspiredarchitecturethatintegratesinformationofdifferent modelcomponentsofthevisualprocessingduetofeedbackconnections.Inparticular,mutualinteractionsbetweenthe detection of motion discontinuities and temporal occlusions allow a considerable improvement of the kinetic boundary detection. Conclusions/Significance:Anewmodelisproposedthatusesopticflowcuestodetectmotiondiscontinuitiesandobject occlusion.Wesuggestthatbycombiningtheseresultsformotiondiscontinuitiesandobjectocclusion,objectsegmentation withinthemodelcanbeimproved.Thisideacouldalsobeappliedinothermodelsforobjectsegmentation.Inaddition,we discusshowthismodelisrelatedtoneurophysiologicalfindings.Themodelwassuccessfullytestedbothwithartificialand realsequencesincludingselfandobjectmotion.
