Methods:Thiswasacross-sectionalstudyrecruitingadultpatientswithadiagnosisofbipolardisorder(Diagnostic andStatisticalManualofMentalDisorders,4thedition,textrevision(DSM-IV-TR)criteria)whohadbeenhospitalized duetoanacutemanicepisodewithaYoungManiaRatingScaletotalscoregreaterthan20.Bivariatecorrelational andmultiplelinearregressionanalyseswereperformedtoidentifyindependentpredictorsofLOS. Results:Atotalof235patientsfrom44centerswereincludedinthestudy.Theonlyfactorsthatweresignificantly associatedtoLOSintheregressionmodelwerethenumberofpreviousepisodesandtheMontgomery-?sberg DepressionRatingScale(MADRS)totalscoreatadmission(P0.05). Conclusions:Patientswithahighnumberofpreviousepisodesandthosewithdepressivesymptomsduring maniaaremorelikelytostaylongerinhospital.Patientswithseveredepressivesymptomsmayhaveamore severeortreatment-resistantcourseoftheacutebipolarmanicepisode.
