Methodology/PrincipalFindings:MultiplestoolsamplesfromarandompopulationsampleweresubjectedtotheKato- Katzmethod,anether-concentrationtechnique,theKogaagarplatemethod,andtheBaermanntechnique.Among180 participantswhosubmittedatleast2stoolsamples,wefoundaS.stercoralisprevalenceof11.7%.Maleshadasignificantly higherprevalencethanfemales(18.3%versus6.1%,p=0.011),andinfectionswereabsentinindividuals,15yearsofage. InfectionswereonlydetectedbytheBaermann(highestsensitivity)andtheKogaagarplatemethod,butneitherwiththe Kato-Katznoranether-concentrationtechnique.Theexaminationof3stoolsamplesratherthanasingleoneresultedinthe detection of 62% and 100% more infections when employing the Koga agar plate and the Baermann technique, respectively.Theuseofamathematicalmodelrevealeda‘true’S.stercoralisprevalenceinthecurrentsettingofupto16.3%. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that S. stercoralis is endemic in the southern part of Yunnan province and that differentialdiagnosisandintegratedcontrolofintestinalhelminthinfectionsneedsmorepointedemphasisinruralChina.
