Methods:Weusedataobtainedfromthe2006HealthSurveyofCataloniaandthe2004CanaryIslandsHealth Survey.WithanordinalcompositevariablemeasuringHRQOLweidentifytheassociationofcharacteristicsof individualswithself-reportedqualityoflifeandtestfordifferencesbetweentheregions. Results:TheprevalenceofproblemsinthefiveEQ-5Ddimensionsincreaseswithageandisgenerallyhigherfor womenthanformen.Thedimensionwiththehighestprevalenceofproblemsis“anxiety/depression”,andthereis noteworthytheextentofdiscomfortandpainamongCanaryIslandwomen.Education,especiallyamongthe elderly,hasanimportanteffectonhealth-relatedqualityoflife. Conclusions:Therearesubstantialstructuralandcompositionaldifferencesbetweenthetworegions.Regional contextisasignificantfactor,independentofthecompositionaldifferences,andtheeffectsofcontextaremanifest aboveallinwomen.Thefindingsshowtheimportanceofdiseasepreventionandtheneedforimprovingthe educationallevelofthepopulationinordertoreducehealthinequalities.
