Shimakawaetal.ConflictandHealth2010,4:4 /content/4/1/4 SHORT REPORT OpenAccess Outbreakofchickenpoxinarefugeecampof northernThailand YusukeShimakawa1,2,OlivierCamélique2,KoyaAriyoshi1* Abstract Althoughchickenpoxisagenerallymild,self-limitedillnessofchildren,itcancausefataldiseaseinadults.Accumu- latingreportsfromtropicalcountriesshowedahighprevalenceofseronegativityamongtheadults,implyingthat varicelladiseasescouldbecomeaheavyburdenintropicalcountries.However,inthesituationofhumanitarian emergenciesintropicalareas,chickenpoxhaslargelybeenignoredasaseriouscommunicabledisease,duetolack ofdataregardingvaricellamortalityandhospitaladmissionsinsuchacontext.Thisisthefirstreportdescribingan outbreakofchickenpoxinarefugeecampoftropicalregion.In2008,weexperiencedavaricellaoutbreakinethnic LaoHmongrefugeecampinPhetchabunProvince,northernThailand.Theattackratewas4.0%(309/7,815)and thiscaused3hospitalizationsincludingonewhodevelopedseverevaricellapneumoniawithrespiratoryfailure.All hospitalizationswereexclusivelyseeninadults,andtheproportionofpatients≥15yearsoldwas13.6%(42/309). Becauselessexposuretovaricella-zostervirusduetolowpopulationdensityhaspreviouslybeensuggestedtobe oneofthereasonsbehindhigherprevalenceofsusceptibleadultsintropics,theinfluxofdisplacedpeoplefrom ruralareastoadenselypopulatedasylummightresultinmanysevereadultcasesonceavaricellaoutbreakoccurs.
