Methods:Intotal,670Australianfirst-timemothersrecruitedaspartoftheNOURISHtrialcompleteda questionnaireregardinginfantfeedingandpacifieruse. Results:Pacifierswereintroducedby79%ofmothers,ofwhom28.7%wereadvisedtouseapacifierbytheir mother/mother-in-lawwithafurther22.7%beingadvisedbyamidwife.Themajorityofmothersusedapacifierin ordertosoothetheirinfant(78.3%),tohelpputthemtosleep(57.4%)andtokeepthemcomfortedandquiet (40.4%).Pacifiersgiventoinfantsbeforefourweeks(adjHR3.67;95%CI2.14-6.28)andusedmostdays(adjHR3.28; 95%CI1.92-5.61)weresignificantlyassociatedwithshorterdurationofbreastfeeding. Conclusions:Thisstudyidentifiesanopportunityforeducatingnewmothersandtheirsupportnetwork, particularlytheirinfant’sgrandmothers,withregardstopotentialrisksassociatedwiththeearlyandfrequentuseof apacifier,andalternativemethodsforsoothingtheirinfant,inordertoreducetheuseofpacifiersandtheir potentiallynegativeeffectonbreastfeedingduration.
