Methods:Analysisofdatafromaprospectivecross-sectionalpopulationbasedstudy.From2004-7,werandomlyrecruited 2000 community participants to the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort collecting extensive socioeconomic, clinical and laboratorydata.Weexcluded153subjectsduetocriticalmissingdata.Pearsonchi-squaretestsandStudent’st-testswere usedforcategoricalandcontinuousvariableanalysis,respectively.Logisticregressionanalysiswasperformedtodetermine theriskfactorsforelevatedALT. Results:Themeanageofthecohortwas45yearsand67%werefemales.Themajorityofthecohortwaseitheroverweight (32.4%)orobese(50.7%).Almosthalf(43.7%)hadMSandnearlyone-thirddiabetes.ElevatedALTlevelwasmoreprevalent in males than females. Obesity was a strong risk for abnormal ALT in both genders. Hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemiaandyoungagewererisksforelevatedALTinmalesonly,whereasincreasedfastingplasmaglucose wasassociatedwithelevatedALTinfemalesonly. Conclusion: We identifiedhigh prevalence of MSandmarkers ofliver injury inthis largeMexican Americancohort with genderdifferencesinprevalenceandriskfactors,withyoungermalesatgreatestrisk.
