Abstract Background:Mandatorygenericsubstitution(GS)wasintroducedinFinlandatthebeginningofApril2003. However,individualpatientsorphysiciansmayforbidthesubstitution.GSwasasignificantchangeforFinnish medicineusers.Itwasthoughtitwouldconfusepeoplewhenthenames,colors,packages,etc.,changed.The purposeofthisstudywastoexplorewhatmedicine-relatedfactorsinfluencepeople’schoiceofprescriptiondrugs fiveyearsaftergenericsubstitutionwasintroducedinFinland. Methods:Apopulationsurveywascarriedoutduringtheautumnof2008.Arandomsamplewasdrawnfromfive mainlandcounties.Aquestionnairewasmailedto3000peopleatleast18yearsoldandlivinginFinland.The questionnaireconsistedofbothstructuredandopen-endedquestions.Factorsthatinfluencedthesubjects’choice ofmedicineswereaskedwithastructuredquestioncontaining11propositions.Descriptivestatisticalanalyseswere performed. Results:Intotal,1844questionnaireswerereturned(responserate,62%).Thepercentageoffemalerespondents was55%.Price,availability,andfamiliaritywerethethreemostimportantfactorsthatinfluencedthechoiceof medicines.ForthepeoplewhohadrefusedGS,thefamiliarityofthemedicinewasthemostimportantfactor.For thesubjectswhohadallowedGSandforthosewhohadbothrefusedandallowedGS,pricewasthemost importantfactor. Conclusions:Thepresentstudyshowsthatprice,familiarity,andavailabilitywereimportantfactorsinthechoice ofprescriptionmedicines.Theexternalcharacteristicsofthemedicines,forinstancethecolorandshapeofthe tablet/capsuleortheappearanceofthepackage,werenotsignificantcharacteristicsforpeople.
