Anatomy of the unpermineralized wood permits conclusiveidentificationtothegenusMetasequoia(Cupressaceae).Thewoodyieldsgenuinecelluloseandoccludedamber, bothofwhichhavebeencharacterizedspectroscopicallyandisotopically.Fromcellulosed18Oandd2Hmeasurements,we inferthatEarlyEocenepaleoclimatesinthewesternCanadiansubarcticwere12–17uCwarmerandfourtimeswetterthan present.CanadiankimberlitesofferLagersta¨tte-qualitypreservationofwoodfromaregionwithlimitedalternatesourcesof paleobotanicalinformation.
