Results:ThepSAG12::ipttransgenicplantsshoweddelayedleafsenescence,increasedbranchingandreduced internodallength,ascomparedtocontrolplants.LeavesandflowersofthepSAG12::iptplantswerereducedinsize anddisplayedamoreintensecoloration.InthetransgeniclinescarryingthePsEND1::barnaseconstructnopollen grainswereobservedinthemodifiedantherstructures,whichdevelopedinsteadofnormalanthers.Theloculesof sterileantherscollapsed3–4dayspriortofloralanthesisand,inmostcases,theundevelopedanthertissues underwentnecrosis. Conclusion:ThechimaericconstructpSAG12::iptcanbeusefulinPelargoniumspp.todelaythesenescenceprocess andtomodifyplantarchitecture.Inaddition,theuseofengineeredmalesterileplantswouldbeespeciallyuseful toproduceenvironmentallyfriendlytransgenicplantscarryingnewtraitsbypreventinggeneflowbetweenthe geneticallymodifiedornamentalsandrelatedplantspecies.Thesecharacteristicscouldbeofinterest,froma commercialpointofview,bothforpelargoniumproducersandconsumers.
