Localization provides potential advantagesasdifferentproteinsinvolvedinthesamecellularprocessmaysupplementeachotheronafasttimescale.It might also prevent proteins from being active in other regions of the cell. However localization is at odds with the spreadingofunboundmoleculesbydiffusion.Wemodelthecostandgainforspecificenzymeactivityusinglocalization strategiesbasedonbindingtositesofintermediatespecificity.Whilesuchbindingsinthemselvesdecreasetheactivityof theproteinonitstargetsite,theymayincreaseproteinactivityifstochasticmotionallowstheactingproteintotouchboth theintermediatebindingsiteandthespecificsitesimultaneously.Wediscussthisstrategyinviewofrecentsuggestionson longnon-codingRNAasafacilitatoroflocalizedactivityofchromatinmodifiers.
