Results:Theproteomepatternofsolublecytosolicproteinsextractedfromrootswasobtainedby2-DE.Ofabout twothousandspotsfound,onlythoseshowingatleastatwo-foldincreaseordecreaseintheconcentrationwere consideredforsubsequentidentificationbymassspectrometry.Fifty-sevenproteinsshowedsignificantchanges, and44ofthemwereidentified.Twenty-oneofthemwereincreasedinquantity,whereas23weredecreasedin quantity.Mostoftheincreasedproteinsbelongtoglycolysisandnitrogenmetabolisminagreementwiththe biochemicalevidence.Ontheotherhand,theproteinsbeingdecreasedbelongtothemetabolismofsucroseand complexstructuralcarbohydratesandtostructuralproteins. Conclusions:Thenewavailabletechniquesallowtocastnewlightonthemechanismsinvolvedinthechanges occurringinplantsunderirondeficiency.Thedataobtainedfromthisproteomicstudyconfirmthemetabolic changesoccurringincucumberasaresponsetoFedeficiency.Twomainconclusionsmaybedrawn.Thefirstone istheconfirmationoftheincreaseintheglycolyticfluxandintheanaerobicmetabolismtosustaintheenergetic efforttheFe-deficientplantsmustundertake.Thesecondconclusionis,ononehand,thedecreaseintheamount ofenzymeslinkedtothebiosynthesisofcomplexcarbohydratesofthecellwall,and,ontheotherhand,the increase
