PsychologicalTyphoonEyeinthe2008Wenchuan Earthquake ShuLi,Li-LinRao,Xiao-PengRen*,Xin-WenBai*,RuiZheng*,Jin-ZhenLi,Zuo-JunWang,HuanLiu InstituteofPsychology,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing,China Abstract Background:OnMay12,2008,anearthquakemeasuring8.0ontheRichterscalejoltedWenchuan,China,leadingto69,227 deathsand374,643injured,with17,923listedasmissingasofSept.25,2008,andshookthewholenation.Weassessedthe devastatingeffectsonpeople’spost-earthquakeconcernaboutsafetyandhealth. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:FromJune4toJuly15,2008,wesurveyedaconveniencesampleof2,262adultsontheir post-earthquake concern about safety and health. Residents in non-devastated areas (Fujian and Hunan Provinces, and Beijing)anddevastatedareas(SichuanandGansuProvinces)respondedtoaquestionnaireof5questionsregardingsafety measures, epidemic disease, medical workers, psychological workers, and medication. The ANOVAs showed a significant effectofresidentialdevastationlevelontheestimatednumberofsafetymeasuresneeded,theestimatedprobabilityofthe outbreakofanepidemic,andtheestimatednumberofmedicalandpsychologicalworkersneeded(Ps,0.001).Thepost- earthquakeconcerndecreasedsignificantlyasthelevelofresidentialdevastationincreased.Becauseofthesimilaritywith themeteorologicalphenomenonoftheeyeofatyphoon,wedubbedthesefindingsa‘‘PsychologicalTyphoonEye’’:the closertothecenterofthedevastatedareas,thelesstheconcernaboutsafetyandhealtharesidentfelt. Conclusions/Significance: Contrary to common perception and ripple effect that the impact of an unfortunate event decaysgraduallyasripplesspreadoutwardfromacenter,a‘‘PsychologicalTyphoonEye’’effectwasobservedwherethe post-earthquake concern was at its lowest level in the extremely devastated areas. The resultant findings may have implicationsforChinesegovernmentalstrategiesforputting‘‘psychologicalcomfort’’intoeffect.
