Methods:ProspectiveclinicbasedstudythatenrolledpatientsreferredforHCVtherapyconsideration.Ahepatitis symptominventoryandtheCenterforEpidemiologicStudiesDepressionScale(CES-D)wereadministeredtoHIV/ HCVindividuals.ThesymptominventorywasfactoranalyzedandsubscalereliabilityestimatedwithCronbach’s alpha.Predictivevaliditywasevaluatedusinggeneralizedestimatingequations(GEE).PredictorsofHCVtreatment wereidentifiedusinglogisticregression. Results:BetweenApril2008toJuly2010,126HIV/HCVco-infectedpatientswereenrolledinthestudy.Factor analysisusingdatafrom126patientsyieldedathree-factorstructureexplaining60%ofthevarianceforthe inventory.Factor1(neuropsychiatricsymptoms)had14items,factor2(somaticsymptoms)hadelevenitems,and factor3(sleepsymptoms)hadtwoitems,explaining28%,22%and11%ofthevariance,respectively.Thethree factorsubscalesdemonstratedhighintrinsicconsistencyreliability.GEEmodelingofthe32patientswhoinitiated HCVtherapyshowedthatpatientsdevelopedworseningneuropsychiatricandsomaticsymptomsfollowingHCV therapywithstablesleepsymptoms.BivariateanalysesidentifiedthefollowingaspredictorsofHCVtherapy initiation:lowerHIVlog10 RNA,lowerscoresforneuropsychiatric,somaticandsleepsymptoms,lowerCES-Dscores andwhiteethnicity.Instepwisemultiplelogisticregressionanalysis,lowneuropsychiatricsymptomscorewasthe strongestindependentpredictorofHCVtherapyinitiationandHIVlog10 RNAwasinverselyassociatedwitha decisiontoinitiateHCVtreatment.
