Aim of thestudy was to evaluate the effectsofreproductivestageonfibrosisseverityinwomenandtocomparethesefindingswithage-matchedmen. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 710 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis C was conducted,usingdatafromaclinicaldatabaseoftwotertiaryItaliancarecenters.Fourage-matchedgroupsofmenserved ascontrols.Dataaboutdemographics,biochemistry,liverbiopsyandultrasonographywereanalyzed.Contributingfactors wereassessedbymultivariatelogisticregressionanalysis. Results: Liver fibrosis was more advanced in the early menopausal than in the fully reproductive (P,0.0001) or premenopausal(P=0.042)group.Latemenopausalwomenhadhigherliverfibrosiscomparedwiththeothergroups(fully reproductive,P,0.0001;premenopausal,P=,0.0001;earlymenopausal,P=0.052).Multivariateanalysesshowedthatmale sexwasindependentlyassociatedwithmoreseverefibrosisinthegroupscorrespondingtoprem
