Results:BycombiningtheconstructionofdifferentcDNAlibrarieswithmicroarrayanalyseswehaveidentifieda totalof496genesinmaritimepine(Pinuspinaster,Ait.)thatchangeinexpressionduringdifferentiationof compressionwood(331up-regulatedand165down-regulatedcomparedtooppositewood).Samplesfrom differentprovenancescollectedindifferentyearsandgeographiclocationswereintegratedintotheanalysesto mitigatetheeffectsofmultiplesourcesofvariability.Thisstrategyallowedustodefineagroupofgenesthatare consistentlyassociatedwithcompressionwoodformation.Correlatingwiththedepositionofathickersecondary cellwallthatcharacterizescompressionwooddevelopment,theexpressionofanumberofgenesinvolvedin synthesisofcellulose,hemicellulose,ligninandlignanswasup-regulated.Furtheranalysisofasetofthesegenes involvedinS-adenosylmethioninemetabolism,ammoniumrecycling,andligninandlignansbiosynthesisshowed changesinexpressionlevelsinparalleltothelevelsofligninaccumulationincellsundergoingxylogenesisinvivo andinvitro
