Todate,nostudyhasinvestigatedhowpsychologicalissuesofcaregiverswouldinfluencerespiratoryvariablesof ALSpatients.ThestudyaimedatfindingoutifthereisarelationshipbetweentherespiratoryfunctionofALS patientsandthelevelofdistressoftheircaregivers. Methods:Across-sectionalstudywasconductedtoinvestigaterespiratoryissues(PCFandFVC)andtheperception ofsocialsupportofALSpatients.Caregiversfilledquestionnairesabouttraitanxiety,depression,andburdenofcare. FortyALSpatientsandtheircaregiverswererecruited. Results:FVCandPCFwerepositivelyrelatedtopatientperceptionofsocialsupportandnegativelyrelatedto caregiveranxiety,depression,andburden. Discussion:ThedistressofALScaregiversisrelatedtopatientrespiratoryissues.Thefirstandmoreintuitive explanationemphasizestheimpactthatthepatient’sclinicalconditionhaswithrespecttothecaregiver.However, itispossibletohypothesizethatifcaregiversfeelpsychologicallybetter,theirpatient’squalityoflifeimprovesand thataconditionofgreaterwell-beingandrelaxationcouldalsoincreaseventilatorycapacity.Furthermore,care managementcouldbecarriedoutmoreeasilybyc
