Seven strains selected and the M. huakuii type strain (isolated from Astragalus sinicus) produced functional nodules on Carmichaeliaspp.,ClianthuspuniceusandA.sinicusbutdidnotnodulatetwoSophoraspecies.Weconcludethatrhizobia closelyrelatedtoM.huakuiionthebasisof16SrRNAandnifHgenesequences,butwithvariablerecAandglnIIgenesand novelnodAandnodCgenes,arecommonsymbiontsofNZCarmichaelinae.
